The Social Ministries at
St. John the Baptist help us proclaim the Good News of Jesus Christ by developing and administering a parish that is for life, justice, and peace- an integral part of our Catholic life. These ministries, are committed to promoting life and peace and to overcoming poverty and injustice. We strive to incorporate all the Social Teachings of the Catholic Church in everything we do.
Caring Hearts is an organization of Parishioners who wish to live their faith by loving and serving their neighbor. Funded every other month by the "Black Bag" collection, the Caring Hearts Ministry helps those who apply for assistance with rent, utilities, medical prescriptions, and other needs. The "Black Bag" collection, along with parish food drives organized by this ministry, also helps support the Alvin Community Food Pantry. Volunteers staff the ministry office each Tuesday from 9:00 am to 2:45 pm.
Volunteers are needed for both permanent and substitute duty.
If you would like to help call the Parish Office or Karen Wollam at 281-744-8252.
All Funerals are arranged through the Funeral Home chosen by the family.
Often times someone is needed to lead the Funeral Rosary or assist the Priest during the Funeral Mass.
If you would like to help in this ministry, English and/or Spanish, please contact the Parish Office.
A Funeral Meal is offered at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in the Parish Hall, if the family requests. This is available if the funeral is Monday through Friday before 2:00 pm. Volunteers from the parish prepare and serve a hot meal for the family and their friends. The committee welcomes anyone willing to assist in this ministry by either preparing a dish at home, baking, or helping to serve the day of the funeral. For more information call the parish office.
Meals on Wheels
St John’s delivers meals for Alvin Meals on Wheels on alternate Tuesdays from 10:45 am to around noon. This ministry delivers a hot meal to senior convalescents (short or long term) and people with disabilities. Our service makes it possible for shut-ins to continue to live independently in their own homes, rather than having to live in an assisted living or nursing home.
Volunteers are needed for both permanent and substitute duty. If interested contact the Parish Office.
Ministers of Care
Ministers of Care are Eucharistic Ministers that provide Eucharist, praying, supporting and comforting to homebound parishioners and nursing home residents. If you have a family member who is unable to join us for Sunday Mass because of age or illness and wishes to receive the Eucharist, please call the Parish Office or Edye Rayburn at 281-299-8878 with the name, address and telephone number of the homebound individual. The request may be for either a short-term or a long-term need.
Kolbe Retreats – For Men Only
The mission of the retreats inside the Texas Department of Criminal Justice and Federal Bureau of Prison system is to share the love of Jesus Christ with those in prison and to teach the fullness of the truth of the Catholic Church to the incarcerated.
With the help of the Kolbe Prison Ministries in the Hill Country, the ArchGH Kolbe Prison Ministries Retreat Team was formed. Influenced by various retreat designs including ACTS, the team developed a three-day retreat format that allows volunteers to share their lives and faith while demonstrating the spirit of love, redemption, and forgiveness that only Christ can give. This ministry requires weekly meetings for 13 weeks before the retreat. Each retreat will be Thursday-Saturday in a prison in the Archdiocese. Meeting nights and times will be determined by each director.
Bridges to Life for Men and Women – Includes Victims of Crimes
BTL’S mission is to connect communities to prisons to bring peace into offenders’ lives when they are incarcerated and reduce the recidivism rate when they are released, thereby effecting a reduction in crime and enhanced public safety.
The spiritual mission is to minister to offenders and victims of crime to show them the transforming power of God’s love and forgiveness.
BTL is a faith-based, restorative justice, victim impact program designed to provide a healing process to crime victims and prison offenders. Participation requires a 14-week commitment to go into a Brazoria County prison one night a week with a team of 8-12 volunteers for two hours in the same prison each week. Depending on the prisons, meetings are on Mondays, Tuesdays, or Wednesdays.
The Gabriel Project is a pro-life, parish-based apostolate of the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston, helping women experiencing difficult circumstances during pregnancy.
The Gabriel Angel Volunteer works directly with pregnant mothers in a role of mentorship and friendship. She will work prayerfully with the mother to assess her needs and offer friendship, prayer and material assistance. All volunteers who will meet with expectant mothers must be VIRTUS certified.
Due to the sometimes difficult nature of working with women in crisis, we recommend that those volunteering with the Gabriel Project have the following characteristics:
• Be a Catholic in good standing;
• Be a member of the parish in which they will
• Have a strong prayer life;
• Be familiar with and accepting of Church
teaching on marriage, family and contraception.
Pro-Life Ministry is devoted to raising awareness and educating parishioners about issues regarding the sacredness of life from conception to natural death. This ministry is open to anyone committed to following the Catholic Church’s teaching regarding life in all stages. If interested please call the Parish Office.
Back to Social Ministries
As we make our Way down the “road“of our spiritual journey, we are sometimes in need of a caring presence to walk with us and to help us reflect on our relationship with God.
Sharing our journey with another can bring us much needed clarity and growth. We can learn to recognize the different ways that God speaks to us through our own life experiences, and learn to savor this loving presence which always dwells with us. It is within this loving embrace that we become all that God has created us to be. You are invited to experience the ministry of Spiritual Direction/ Companion, a sacred and holy space where your heart is always welcome. If you are interested in meeting with a Spiritual Director /Companion please call the church office at 281-331-3751 and one of us will contact you.
