The Social Ministries at
St. John the Baptist help us proclaim the Good News of Jesus Christ by developing and administering a parish that is for life, justice, and peace- an integral part of our Catholic life. These ministries, are committed to promoting life and peace and to overcoming poverty and injustice. We strive to incorporate all the Social Teachings of the Catholic Church in everything we do.
Caring Hearts is an organization of Parishioners who wish to live their faith by loving and serving their neighbor. Funded every other month "Black Bag" collection, the Caring Hearts Ministry helps those who apply for assistance with rent, utilities, medical prescriptions, and other needs. The "Black Bag" collection aiong with parish food drives organized by this ministry also helps support the Alvin Community Food Pantry. Volunteers staff the ministry office each Tuesday from 9:00 AM to 2:45 PM. Volunteers are needed for both permanent and substitute duty.
All Funerals are arranged through the Funeral Home chosen by the family.
Often times someone is needed to lead the Funeral Rosary or assist the Priest during the Funeral Mass. If you would like to help in this ministry, English and/or Spanish, please contact the Parish Office at 281-331-3751.
A Funeral Meal is offered at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in the Parish Hall, if the family requests. This is available if the funeral is Monday through Friday before 2:00 pm. Volunteers from the parish prepare and serve a hot meal for the family and their friends. The committee welcomes anyone willing to assist in this ministry by either preparing a dish at home, baking, or helping to serve the day of the funeral. For more information call the parish office 281-331-3751.
St John’s delivers meals for Alvin Meals on Wheels on alternate Tuesdays from 10:45 am to around noon. This ministry delivers a hot meal to senior convalescents (short or long term) and people with disabilities. Our service makes it possible for shut-ins to continue to live independently in their own homes, rather than having to live in an assisted living or nursing home. Volunteers are needed for both permanent and substitute duty. If interested contact the Parish Office 281-331-3751.
Ministers of Care are Eucharistic Ministers that provide Eucharist, praying, supporting and comforting to homebound parishioners and nursing home residents. If you have a family member who is unable to join us for Sunday Mass because of age or illness, and wishes to receive the Eucharist, please call the Parish office 281-331-3751 with the name, address and telephone number of the homebound individual. The request may be for either a short-term or a long-term need.
The Prison Ministry at St. John’s is always
looking for volunteers to help. Every other Saturday they visit the Wayne Scott Correction Facility in Angleton to administer the Eucharist and help the priest with the Mass. If you feel that this is where the Holy Spirit is calling you, and are currently an Extraordinary Eucharistic Minister, there is a one day orientation required for Prison Ministry. If you would like to try before committing, the orientation can be waived for two visits and you can experience the importance and satisfaction before going through the orientation. For more information you can call the Parish Office at 281-331-3751 or email us at firstname.lastname@example.org.

Help with needed items after the baby's arrival is also available. If you know someone who is pregnant and needs some solid Christian direction, please call 713-225-5826 for more information. The Gabriel Project at St. John the Baptist also welcomes donations. We are always in need for newborn infant diapers, wipes and consumable toiletries. Anyone interested in helping with this important ministry, please contact the Parish Office.

As we make our Way down the “road“of our spiritual journey, we are sometimes in need of a caring presence to walk with us and to help us reflect on our relationship with God.
Sharing our journey with another can bring us much needed clarity and growth. We can learn to recognize the different ways that God speaks to us through our own life experiences, and learn to savor this loving presence which always dwells with us. It is within this loving embrace that we become all that God has created us to be. You are invited to experience the ministry of Spiritual Direction/ Companion, a sacred and holy space where your heart is always welcome. If you are interested in meeting with a Spiritual Director /Companion please call the church office at 281-331-3751 and one of us will contact you.
